Guitar Repair

The most popular service I offer is a "pro set-up." This should be done to ALL guitars
once a year. Here's why: Guitars are made of wood. Wood is porous, and even
lacquered wood will react to seasonal changes in climate, temperature and humidity.
This can result in a big change in how well your guitar plays. Necks can bow or
straighten from climate effects, and this will result in buzzing strings, "high action"
(strings are hard to press down), intonation problems, etc.
Set-up should also be performed if you change string gauges as this will change your
intonation and action quite a bit.
Even if you just got your guitar straight from the Factory- or from a retailer- it may still need
a set-up. Because all players have different tastes in string gauge, action, etc, most guitars
are given a very generic set-up at the factory. For example, string height at the nut is often
left pretty high. Some players like it that way. Most don't. But it is easier to lower the string
height than it is to raise it, which would involve replacing the nut.
I lower the string height to very precise tolerances using a set of special string slot files.
Pro set-up for electric guitar ($45) includes:
Change strings
Set intonation (so your guitar plays in tune up and down the neck)
Adjust string height at nut (most effective with bone or synthetic nuts.
plastic nuts cannot be lowered much)
Set action (height of strings above the frets- this affects how easy it is to play)
Adjust neck relief
Clean and polish frets
Check for loose pots or connections
Graphite lube in nut slots
Set pickup height
Balance tremolo
Clean and oil fingerboard
Clean and polish guitar
A perfectly slotted nut.

Some problems can be avoided with a little preventive maintenance on your part.
*Keep your guitar clean, Wipe strings clean after use. Wipe sweat and grime off bridge,
tailpiece, switches. Use a soft cotton cloth like flannel or an old t-shirt.
*Avoid changes in temperature or humidity. Guitars are made of wood, and they will
expand and contract. DO NOT leave your guitar in the car. Ever. Summer heat and Winter
cold will do all sorts of nasty things to your guitar. The finish may crack. Glued joints may
weaken.
